Madison Square Garden hosts 320 events a year and is home to the New York Knicks basketball team and New York Rangers hockey team, who play their home matches at the Garden, the teams being owned by the Garden itself.
Hockey games allow a Garden capacity of 18,200. Basketball generates a capacity of 19,763, and concerts see a passionate 20,000 fans at center stage, and as many as 19,522 end-stage. The arena covers 20,976 square feet of MSG floor space.
Seating in Madison Square Garden today is organized via five levels, beginning at the lowest level. This is known as "rink-side" or "court-side" depending on the sport being played. The second level is the First Promenade, and the third level is called the Second Promenade. the fourth level is known as the First Balcony and the fifth and highest level is termed the Second Balcony.
In days gone by, the Garden was notorious for the outbreaks of violence in the crowd, particularly during New York Rangers games. The ushers working Rangers games had a noted bias: They would allow New Yorkers to land a few free kicks or punches on the opposition, before these hapless visitors were dragged off and probably kicked out onto the streets of Manhattan.
These days, the venue has recovered to a large extent, with the denizens of the 400 level the one remaining section responsible for antagonizing visiting fans with chants and songs. The 400 level, once known as the "blue seats" still attracts working-class New Yorkers, who love nothing more than a rowdy night out at the game.
