When people hear the words Madison Square Garden, they often think of glittering clashes in the world of sport, or pulsating and memorable performances from the world's greatest musicians, but the Garden has a more refined aspect to it, too, a rich tapestry of drama, theater, and personal performance, connecting it to the earliest form of expression of Western thought.
The nature of the venue conjurs a simpler era, a time when the Circus coming to town was big news, and MSG has moved through a variety of different stations in history since those innocent days. Dramatic productions, television premieres, and sporting functions have all found a home in the Garden Theater.
The Theater at Madison Square Garden was once used to host the NFL draft, back before the draft was moved to the Radio City Music Hall (itself a MSG-leased property) and was proud home to the seasonal play A Christmas Carol for a straight decade. Sesame Street, the popular children's TV show, is also performed there, along with a curious sprinkling of other events. CBS Television's Fall Premiere has been traditionally filmed there, and even technical world events, such as product launches for Infinity and Intel, the automobile and computer giants.
Comedians regularly grace the stage of the Garden Theater, as well as musical acts preferring to play to a more intimate audience. Artists such as Nora Jones and Van Morrison are scheduled to play the Theater at MSG in 2007, along with comedian Ricky Gervais, writer and hilarious actor/comedic star of TV's award-winning show The Office. Later in the year, when the snow begins to fall, the celebrated Cirque Du Soleil theater group will perform their enchanted A Winter's Tale to adoring theater-goers.
